Blind-Accessible HF Radios
Summary

Earlier versions of the Kenwood TH-D74A are the most accessible hand-held HF radios. A review by Chris, WB9RSQ is here.

Chris has also posted audio user guides for the radio, starting with a general introduction you can listen to here.

Note added 10/8/2021: Kenwood discontinued production of the TH-D74A because a critical component is no longer available. Dual band handheld transceivers (from other manufacturers) with voice prompts are not affected by this problem.

*Note added 5/31/2022: Kenwood now lists specifications for the revised TH-D74A as a tri-band (VHF/UHF) radio. HF transmission capability has been removed.

For a base-station or portable HF radio, there are many choices of speech-synthesizers indexed here.

If you prefer a radio with a built-in speech synthesizer, Kenwood radios are the most accessible brand. Kenwood speech cards for various models are described here.

Additional information for hams with low vision is in a separate page about Accessible Transceivers.

The Active Elements web site for blind hams by Kelvin, M0AID, has reviews of radios and an email group.
